Students read the extraordinary survival story of a thirteen-year-old boy in the 1700s, who is left to guard his family’s new claim in Maine. While Matt waits and guards their cabin he is robbed, meets a boy from the Beaver clan, and begins adapting to life in the wilderness. He learns many difficult survival lessons. As we read this book, students will be introduced to the geography of Maine, become familiar with the Penobscot Tribe and discuss the plot and vocabulary of the story. Students learn the basics of writing a book report and complete a creative project.
