Dragon’s Gate is a wonderful historical fiction book that engages the reader at the start. It is adventure-filled and action-packed. The main character, Otter, flees China to join his father and uncle in building a tunnel for the Transcontinental Railroad through the Sierra Mountains in 1867. A coming-of-age tale, this novel is filled with exceptional characters and important lessons such as learning to stand up for yourself, being brave, and working as a team. Dragon’s Gate gives a clear understanding of the hardships and discrimination faced by Chinese workers during the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad.
