Two-Day ELA & Math Enrichment Class

This class is the continuation of the first semester first and second grade enrichment class where students have the opportunity to learn in a warm and engaging classroom environment. New students are welcome to join! This two-day a week class continues to support the concepts being taught in math and in English language arts. There will be plenty of opportunities to have fun and build friendships. Students participate in activities with partners, small groups, and the entire class, practicing reading, writing, and math skills.
Through poetry and memorization, fun stories and reader’s theaters, copy-work, games and crafts, your student will practice language arts skills such as penmanship, phonics, grammar, and reading skills.
Like in the fall, this winter and spring session has a dedicated time to practice core math concepts and build problem solving and critical thinking skills. Using games and hands-on activities as well as through written work, students strengthen their foundation in essential math skills, building confidence and a love of math. Math will also be integrated into our literature-based activities.

Adventures in Scandinavia

The traditional cultures of Finland, Sweden and Norway are magical and inspiring. Through delightful stories of trolls and elves, photos and facts, games and fun hands-on crafts, we will learn the geographical features and culture of each of these countries. We will learn about the day in the life of a Scandinavian child and even how to say something in each language. Stories and characters we may read about include: Elsa Beskow’s "Peter in Blueberry Land", "The Children of the Forest", "The Sun Egg", Rolf Lindberg’s "Trolls", Sven Nordqvist’s "Findus and Pettson" stories, Tove Janson’s "Moomin Trolls" and Astrid Lindgren’s stories.

Youth develop friendships, cooperation, and character values. Healthy team competition providing a context for practicing humility, overcoming obstacles, strategic thinking, and being part of a community!

Help your child become a stronger, more confident, and more fluent reader while learning story elements. In this class students are provided numerous opportunities to practice reading with success. New or difficult words are introduced first and then using a range of stories and informational texts students participate in a variety of activities such as choral reading, reader's theatre, partner reading, and more. Students also learn to analyze story elements which aids in reading comprehension, leads to a deeper understanding of literature, and helps students develop and write their own stories.
Note: This class is covers different content from Reading:Comprehension, Fluency & Story Elements Part 1. Students are welcome to join at any time!
