This hands-on class will dig deep into the study of plants including their structure, growth, reproduction, and relationship with other organisms and the environment. While exploring the connections between their health, environment and food system, students learn the ways humans use plants for food, medicine, and other purposes.
Outside Classwork: Most work will be finished in class. Homework may include watching videos to prepare for class, reading assignments, and/or to finish unfinished classwork, and will take less than 1 hour per week.

In this class, students focus on understanding the differences between writing to inform and writing to explain while continuing to improve grammatical correctness, vocabulary development, and revision and editing skills. Students analyze and utilize mentor pieces as a model, complete prewriting organizers, and share in skilled-based instruction necessary for writing strong essays.
Students should be able to independently write an 8-sentence paragraph. All assignments are required to be typed in order to make the revision process easier.

Students will learn about the various components of writing stories and will work on developing their own unique voice through testing out a variety of genres.
Mini lessons and in-class writing time are combined with engaging exercises, creating the building blocks used to improve student writing. Along the way, we'll explore the foundations of great storytelling--character, setting, atmosphere, and plot--as we build our own short stories.
Of course, we won't forget to have fun. Once learned, these skills will serve as tools that students can keep using as they write in the future!
Outside Classwork: Students write and revise each week.

In addition to completing a large map of the United States, fact sheets, students are challenged to learn the states and capitals.
Outside Classwork: Homework includes reviewing states and capitals and finishing up work that isn’t completed during class.

Explore historical information and identify physical features, government, and all the fun facts that make each state unique. Students gain an understanding of locating information from different sources, basic note-taking, and using the information from the notes to write informative paragraphs.
Included in this class are the elements of the traditional paragraph format: topic sentences, supporting sentences, details, and closing sentences, title page, and works cited page. The class expands upon your child's foundation in writing and helps them gain an understanding of writing a report.

If you like telling stories with your art, this class is for you! Learn the basics of creating characters and storyboarding short comic strips and animation sequences in this writing and drawing course. Students will work individually and in groups to create pairings of characters and story ideas then learn to block out the most important visuals and key poses. We will explore Pixar’s storytelling rules and learn how to draw simple and interesting characters plus learn about settings, composition, and more.
Art Supply list: one mixed media pad or bristol board pad 8x11 (important for having the best results with pen and ink art), one thin tip and one thick tip sharpie ( or a good set of Micron or Prismacolor black ink pens), drawing pencil and eraser, one sketch paper pad (some are as little as $1.99 each)
Outside Classwork: Light homework, which will usually involve finishing art not finished in class.

Matisse, Rembrandt, and Picasso had unique ways of painting and drawing animals. In this fun class, students will learn to draw animals realistically and creatively in modern art styles. Topics will include color theory, gesture drawing, sketching with ink, Cubism, Impressionism, and more. This creative class is a great introduction to art theory, master artists, and drawing.
Outside Classwork: No formal homework - just practicing techniques learned each week in class or finishing class assignment
Supplies: Drawing pad--8x10 or larger, good drawing pencil, kneaded eraser, charcoal pencil. Other supplies provided by instructor.

Matisse, Rembrandt, and Picasso had unique ways of painting and drawing animals. In this fun class, students will learn to draw animals realistically and creatively in modern art styles. Topics will include color theory, gesture drawing, sketching with ink, Cubism, Impressionism, and more. This creative class is a great introduction to art theory, master artists, and drawing.
Outside Classwork: No formal homework - just practicing techniques learned each week in class or finishing class assignment
Supplies: Drawing pad--8x10 or larger, good drawing pencil, kneaded eraser, charcoal pencil. Other supplies provided by instructor.
