Why is it important to master Math Facts? Research has shown that one cannot excel in math without fluency in basic facts! It is the foundation which aids in problem solving, increases confidence, forms building blocks for higher level math concepts, saves time and reduces math anxiety. In this 6-week class, your student will be able to recall basic math facts accurately, quickly, and effortlessly using a variety of tools including math manipulatives and fun games.

Egypt, The Land of Mystery

Learn the fascinating truth about the Egyptians. They were incredible builders, but why did they build those pyramids? Were they in love with death? Most Egyptians worked hard, but what else did they do? How did the Nile shape the success of the Egyptian culture and legacy? Each week focuses on one or two aspects of Ancient Egypt. Lesson topics include: pyramids and temples, rulers, scientific contributions, the Rosetta Stone, Egyptian writing and art, and much more. During this class students practice the art of note-taking during short lectures and assigned reading.
Outside Classwork: Students will practice taking notes from short reading assignments and finishing projects started in class.

Students dive into the fascinating history of Ancient Rome and take a look at its lasting heritage to the world. This unique empire was ruled from a city and expanded to one of the largest empires in the ancient world. We will take a look at Rome’s talent for borrowing and improving concepts of other cultures, and what made Rome powerful. The focus is on what the Ancient Roman civilization contributed to modern life including technological and architectural feats. As students study Ancient Rome, they also work on summarizing from their notes.

Students explore the lasting contributions Ancient India made to the world's knowledge and culture. The course is organized with the key "big idea" concepts for social studies. Some of the concepts covered are: economy, government /leadership, social classes, geography, religion, and achievements. Through teaching with these key concepts, students become familiar with the crucial attributes that have enabled India's civilization to prosper. Our study starts with the geography of India where students research the Indus Valley and find out how the importance of its geography played in its success. Next, students look at the first empires, India's caste system, and learn the influential leader, Gandhi. Come join us for seven weeks of highly-engaging, hands-on lessons to teach your students all about the intricacies of Ancient India.

The course begins with the basics and gradually moves to more complex and organic compositions inspired by nature, fantasy and book illustration. In addition, students are taught various techniques to create sketches with a sense of depth and an overall architectural look.
Projects Include:

- Architecture inspired by everyday objects
- Dr. Suess and buildings
- Fantastic Tree house project
Materials needed: Pencil, ruler, sharpie, watercolor set or markers, drawing- or watercolor paper (90lb)

Writing Skills Seminar: The Writer’s Notebook

It takes time and practice to learn proper writing techniques. This semester-long course keeps students engaged in consistent writing practice and provides regular personalized feedback. Each week focuses on one type of writing and uses clever and creative ways to keep writing fresh. Students practice and refine their writing skills through lively instruction which focuses on the six traits of writing: purpose, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and mechanical correctness. Through the use of games and collaborative activities, literary devices and techniques are also practiced. This class is designed to be fun and inspiring and provide a supportive atmosphere to foster creativity and self-expression.
Many kinds of non-fiction writing opportunities are taught including quick-writes, summarizing, persuasive and opinion pieces, a news story, a character sketch, and informational and procedural writing. Students also explore dialogue, descriptions, and transitional words, phrases, and clauses that help move their essays through a sequence of events.
Note: If you are looking for a year-long writing program, this class with The Writer’s Toolbox & Creative Writing class is a perfect combination.

In this class students gain an introduction to different creative forms of writing such - memoirs, personal essays, letters, free writing, journals, flash fiction, vignettes, etc. Since figurative language, also called a figure of speech, makes writing more compelling, this course starts out by helping students understand the names of different figurative language techniques, and why they are effective. As students learn about each type, they review examples and create examples of their own. Next, they’ll complete a fun writing activity for each type of figurative language. In addition, students participate in numerous creative activities to make the process fun and engaging.
