Island of the Blue Dolphins Book Discussion Group

4th-7th Grade

Tuesdays 10:00-10:50

6 Weeks: March 26 April 2, 9, 16, 30

Location: Jewish Community Center of MV

Tuition:$130   (Includes book for students to keep and all class materials)

Based on the true story of Juana Maria, a Native American, left alone on San Nicolas Island, off the coast of California in the 19th Century. This is a story of survival as Karana waits to be rescued. The focal point of this award-winning classic is how to read a book. Students are taught specific reading strategies such as book previewing, annotating, making inferences, and how to answer comprehension questions. This course does not include our regular literature curriculum. The emphasis is on building comprehension skills and having shared discussions. Therefore, students receive the book and instructions prior to the first class. Students begin reading assigned chapters before the first class and come to class ready to discuss the story on the first day.

Outside Classwork: Students read assigned chapters and complete light assignments designed to help students come to class prepared to discuss the book in a meaningful way.
