Experience the rich history of Pony Express. In this two-week class students will learn how mail was carried across the country in 1860’s until the telegraph replaced it.  Through mini-lectures and hands-on cooperative activities, students find out who started the mail delivery service, which route the brave riders took and the numerous obstacles they encountered, and how long it took to carry mail overland.  In this class students will take some notes, have some light reading, and work in small groups.

Outside Classwork: Students may need to read short passages and complete work not finished in class.

Instructors: Laurie Weir & Adrienne Collins
Suggested Companion Classes:Transcontinental Railroad Project, Island of the Blue Dolphins Book Discussion Group, California Geography, Patty Reed's Doll Literature class, First Californians & Missions, The California Gold Rush, Art Journal on the Pioneer Trail
