Build your budding reader’s confidence with reading in the reader’s theater. Master the lines of a character in a story as you practice reading with repetition. The reader's theater class will build reading skills such as reading fluency, reading with expression, and reading confidence. To support the story, students will also make small props to go with the readers theater and will present to parents as we complete each theater.

Quick recall of basic math facts is essential as students progress into the higher-level computation. This class is the perfect class for students who have worked on multiplication but have not reached mastery. Success comes with continued practice and strategies to figure out answers quickly. As we travel west with eight-year-old Patty Reed and her family, we learn about her story of hardship, courage, and determination told by her wooden doll. The Reed family along with others join the Donner Party to take a short cut on the last leg of their journey. They were stranded in heavy snows in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the winter of 1846. Students build covered wagons and select supplies from a 1800s era Sears Catalog needed for this long trip as we read this fascinating story. During this class students read, learn how to take Cornell two-column notes, and make giant timelines.

Join us as we engineer machines that will go head to head in races and jousting battles! Concepts taught include gear ratios, inertia, and traction. We will be using electronics to make the projects come to life, and students will face challenges such as our steep slope challenge on our custom rail track and a jousting battle. Students will also have a chance to earn a medal and receive prizes and awards on the final day! This class is considered intermediate.

This semester-long unit focuses on the Industrial Revolution. Students build a body of knowledge on the subject and recognize the impact of Industrialization on today’s world. Through student-centered lectures, activities, and collaborative projects, students become aware of the great inventions and great inventors of the revolution, and the urban factories and labor unions that changed the way things were produced and how people lived. Both the positive and negative effects of the great inventions and machines that made life easier for some and more difficult for others are highlighted. Students also take on the role of investigative reporters to learn about major figures and events of the Industrial Revolution and demonstrate the scope of their learning. Students blend their knowledge from the classroom lessons with their own research and then write opinion pieces, feature articles, journal entries, and more.
Outside Classwork: Varies depending on skill level. Students write and revise, read related materials, and complete assignments not finished in class. This class is the continuation of the first semester speech and debate class; however, new students are welcome to join. Students continue to learn and practice the art of speech and debate, develop research, reasoning, organizational, and essay writing skills. Students refine leadership skills while becoming more confident speakers and debaters.
While collaborating with other students, your student can expect to gain a deeper understanding of the power and responsibility of a well trained voice, increase their confidence, and consistently use critical thinking skills. Through games and meaningful application, students learn proper speech techniques and polished delivery. Students engage in structured argumentation, learn how to research and support their developing perspectives and apply their learning through debates. Using our unique teaching approach, we incorporate several team and partner assignments, along with key concepts from the renowned National Forensic League.
Please note: If your child has taken speech and debate with us before, each year follows a new curriculum, so the class may be taken multiple times.
Outside Classwork: Students are expected to research topics, write speeches, and rehearse presentations outside of class.

In this class students gain an introduction to different creative forms of writing such - memoirs, personal essays, letters, free writing, journals, flash fiction, vignettes, etc. Since figurative language, also called a figure of speech, makes writing more compelling, this course starts out by helping students understand the names of different figurative language techniques, and why they are effective. As students learn about each type, they review examples and create examples of their own. Next, they’ll complete a fun writing activity for each type of figurative language. In addition, students participate in numerous creative activities to make the process fun and engaging.
Note: If you are looking for a year-long writing program, this class with The Writer’s Notebook is a perfect combination.
Outside Classwork: Students write and revise each week. Depending on ability level, students should expect to spend approximately 1-1.5 hours a week
